Heath Band

The Heath Band began its life in 1933 when a group of friends got together to begin what has become a flourishing and very popular Brass Band in Bedfordshire.
Many family members of the original founders still play in the Band today and the Band has a growing junior band of which it is very proud.

There was no money or equipment available at the start and only about 6 members had any previous experience. Many functions were arranged to raise funds and instruments were purchased as cash became available.

As the band grew in both numbers and experience competitions were entered and it was not long before the band became prize winners at many local and national contests.
In the early 1980's the band travelled to France to the town of Coulommiers, the twin town of Leighton Buzzard. Here, the band met and became friends with the local accordion band - the Accordion Club de la Brie. The links with the accordion band continue to the present day with regular exchanges taking place. During these visits to France concerts have been played at many prestigious venues including Paris, Chantilly, Fontainebleu and the Palace of Versailles.

Closer to home, the band performs at many local fetes and fayres during the Summer with concerts given throughout the year.

In these days of high profile sponsorship the band prides itself in being self-supporting, earning money from engagements and also being stoutly supported by a hard working Ladies' Committee organising events such as jumble sales, fayres, car boot sales and social events. This can perhaps be put into context when it is realised that the general running costs alone are around £4,000 per year.

The Band is always keen to welcome new members and a learners class is available on Friday evenings. The learners classes have proved so popular that a junior band has been created that regularly performs at the Bands own concerts held at the Leighton Theatre.
